DR. LISTON’S SPEECH.
THE SEDITION CHARGES. WILL THEY BE IVTTHDRAWN ’ THE GOVERNMENT’S ACTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. There were many rumors <;urrent in the city to-day that, following Bishop Liston’s letter to the Prime Minister, proceedings authorised against him on a charge of seditious utterances would be stopped, but no confirmation of this rumor could be obtained. Though It may be within the power of the Govednment to stop proceedings in any prosecution, such power is used on*y on very rare occasions, and when there are special circumstances. For example, if the information upon which the charge is based is found to be incorrect in essential particulars, so that even if the case went for trial there would be no likelihood, of a conviction being obtained.
