CUSTOMS REVENUE.
TEN YEARS’ COMPARISON. The following official table shows the amount of Customs revenue collected during each of the past ten financial years:
It will be seen that the amount collected during the financial year ending March 31 last is thus the second largest collection during the ten-year period; and, indeed, throughout the history of New Zealand. This, no doubt, is due in part to the increased Customs taxation imposed by last session’s Tariff Act. The great jump in Customs revenue Ji the year 1920-21 was due to the filling of orders that had accumulated during the war period and after the armistice, the increase of British exports to New Zealand and elsewhere being greatly stimulated by the decreased purchasing power at Home and on the Continent, resulting from the slump.
