THE COST OF LIVING.
FURTHIfR FALL RECORDED. LATEST OFFICIAL FIGURES. Another fall in the cost of living is recorded in the monthly abstract of ■statistics for March, which has just been issued. It says: “The index number for the three food groups as at February 15 (Dominion weighted average) is 1549, a decrease of 25 points as compared with the preceding month’s figure (1574), and an increase of 44.77 per cent, os compared with that for July, 1914. A fall of 60 points has been recorded in the groceries group—due mainly to an all-round decrease in the price of potatoes. In the case of some towns onions and flour have ffhown a slight decrease. In the dairy-products group the rise of fivepoints is due to an all-round increase in the price of eggs, the effect of which increase is to a large extent counteracted by a fall in the price of milk in several towns. In Die meat group prices have remained practically stationary, a difference of only one point being recorded for the month.”
