At a meeting of the local Rugby Union there was a discussion on the amended rules played by the Auckland Union. Air. Heenan moved that delegates to the New Zealand. Union be instructed to recommend it to play under the modified rules. He objected strongly to a continuance of the system, and contended that the danger from the League, which had frightened ’Auckland, was exaggerated. Other memebers, supporting him, pointed out that Africa and New .South Wales were against the alteration, and had to be considered. Some members did not like the idea of tying the hands of delegates, and an amendment was offered, merely disapproving of the amei ..-d rules re kicking into touch. The annual meeting of the Rugby Union disclosed healthy prospects, and a hope was expressed that a ' Maori team would visit Australia during the ensuing season. Nine clubs are participating in the first grade—seven district clubs, one university club, and one old boys’ club. Two innovations were adopted, the kicking into touch rule, as used in Auckland, and the appointment of time-keepers to relieve the referee of the responsibility. The following will represent Old I Boys’ seniors in a practice match against the High School on the racecourse to-morrow at 2.45 p.m.: Valentine, Thompson, Lem, Little, Sykes, Renaud, Atkinson, McGregor, Doile, C. Clare, Blundell, R. Boon, Ridge, James, Smith. Emergencies: Back, Williams; forwards, Knapman and Brookes. OKAIAWA* TOURNAMENT. WON BY JOLL’S, LTD. For the seven-aside football tournament held at Okaiawa on Wednesday, there was a large number of entries, and, considering the early stage of the season, a capital exhibition was given, especially by the New Plymouth High School boys, who gave evidence of careful training. The final was between Hawera and Joll’s, and the latter secured the victory. Nine teams competed. First Round. Eltham beat Kaponga by two points. Cargo scored an unconverted try for the winners, who gave away a point by forcing the ball twice. Joll’s easily defeated Okaiawa B by 12 points to nil. Guy, Purcell, Nichols (unconverted tries) and Taylor (penalty goal) scored for the winners. The game between New Plymouth Boys’ High School and Okaiawa A resulted in a win for the -former by 7 to nil after a fast and interesting game. Give-and-take play characterised the game between Hawera. and Stratford, won by the former by 3to y 2 - Hawera’s try was scored by Osborne. Kaponga B had a bye. Second Round. Joll’s beat High School by 11$ points to 4. For the winners Taylor kicked a goal and Giiy scored two tries, one being converted by Taylor. Brown potted a. clever goal for School. Hawera secured a runaway victory from Kaponga B, the final score being 24 to $. The final between Joll’s and Hawera was keenly contested, the decision going to Joll’s by 5 points to nil. For the winners Harnmersley scored a try which Taylor converted. The members of the winning team were: Kilpatrick, Purvis. Guy, Nichols, Taylor, Harnmersley and Birchall.

TARANAKI REFEREES. THE NORTHERN COMMITTEE. The northern committee of the Taranaki Referees’ Association has already held three meetings this season, in addition to the annua' meeting, all of which have been largely attended by local members. Good work has been done in bringing the association up-to-date and organising in readiness for the coming season, which has every appearance of being a strenuous one. Applications to join the association have been remarkably good, the following having been admitted to membership subject to the usual examination:—Messrs. G. Bertrand, C. E. Andrews, J. Coleman, W. Crockett, J. Read, J. Scrimgeour, C. Fairbrother, L. Humphries, F. J. Eggleton. Donations of £1 from Mr. R. Barlow, vice-president, and from the Star Football Club have been received, and the association wish to express their sincere thanks for same. The following delegates have been ippointed for the ensuing year on the executive of the Taranaki Referees’ Association: Messrs. W. Roch and E. Andrews. Mr. J. O’Shea has been appointed as de’egate on the appointment board. The classification committee consists of Messrs. G. Hopkins, J. O’Shea and A. Davis. The northern committee have decided to take a firm stand this year in the matter of players playing in their correct club eolors, and wish it made clear to all players, botj) junior and senior, that the New Zealand Rugby Union rule on this point will be carried out to the letter. Next Monday evening the meeting will be mostly confiined to discussing proposals will be placed by delegates before the meeting of the executive, which will be held in the near future.
