Indications point to a very successful meeting on Easter Monday. Mr. A. Morse has the course in splendid order, and all that is required to ensure a large attendance is reasonably fine weather. Owing to the heavy Government taxation making it increasingly difficult for clubs to pay their way, the committee has been reluctantly compelled to strictly discontinue the issue of complimentary tickets, but they have fixed prices of admission at very moderate rates so as to bring them within reach of all. The following horses have been rehandicapped: — Taranaki District Handicap.—Rose Bingen 132yds bhd. Waimate Plains Cup. —Harry Audubon 60yds bhd, Ballin 60ydv bhd. Eltham Handicap.—Harry Audubon 24vds bhd, Inclement and L allin 36yds bhd.
TWO HORSES DESTROYED. POTOA KING ~A ND PRODIGAL. A peculiar accident occurred on the New Plymouth racecourse yesterday morning. Potoa King was being ridden over the grass track the reverse way in order td get him accustomed to the Auckland course, when he got out of hand, and dashed for the wire fence near the High School. He hit one of the concrete posts, which snapped, and the impact was so great that live other concrete posts also broke. The colt fell over the fence, the rider (Simpson) luckily escaping with a few abrasions. An examination showed that his right shoulder was badly fractured and his spine injured, and the animal was forthwith destroyed. Potoa King was by Potoa—Latona, and was owned by M?. W. Lile, of Inglewood, and trained by Mr. E. George. He was entered for two races at the forthcoming Auckland meeting. Another racehorse accident occurred last night, as a result of which Mr. R. Barlow’s bay gelding Prodigal «aa to be destroyed. The horse, together with Leithfield, was being walked to the breakwater preparatory to being shipped by the s.s. Waimea to Westport. when Prodigal was struck by a tram-car. As a result the horse had to be destjpyed. Prodigal’s pedigree was by Danube or Sutala —Lady Wayward 11. He was a five-year-old, being bought by Mr. Barlow two years ago for 200 guineas.
