Rees (Coalition-Unionist) moved for a Royal Commission to inquire into the public expenditure on public assistance, the cost of which had risen from twenty-five millions between 18901891 up to 332 millions in 1920-1921. In moving his motion, he pointed out that excluding the unemployed, thirty million out of a population of forty-eight millions received public assistance in some form.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
