VARSITY BOAT RARE.
WON BY CAMBRIDGE. AN EASY VICTORY. IN SLOW TIME. By Telegraph.—-Press Assn. —Copyright. Received March 2, 5.5 p.m. London, April 1. Cambridge won the boat race. The race was rowed in fine, wintry weather, a bleak easterly wind blowing over the water. The conditions were good. Huge crowds lined the banks. The Duke of York followed in a motor-boat. Cambridge won the toss and chose the Middlesex side. Oxford began with a 38 stroke, and Cambrdige with a 36. The lead alternated in the first few minutes. At the mile post Cambridge was leading by a length, and retained this advantage throughout. At Hammersmith they led by a length and three-quarters, and at Chiswick Steps by two lengths. Thereafter the race developed into a procession. Cambridge was rowing only 28; nevertheless Oxford could not overtake them, despite spurts, and Cambridge won by three and a half lengths. The time, 19min 27 secs., is the slowest since 1911. Oxford finished raggedly, several of the men being distressed, while Cambridge finished quite fresh. It was unfortunate that at the eleventh hour a change in the Oxford crew had to be made. Cambridge were strong favorites. That Pedder was shaping remarkably well is undoubtedly due to the fact that he rowed fourth in his school and college “eights”.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [The time given appears to be inaccurate, as the slowest time in the period mentioned was 1325 seconds (22min ssec). Cambridge has now won 33 times and Oxford 38, there being a dead heat in 1877.] GOLF. WINNERS OF CHAMPIONSHIP. KIRKWOOD TIES FOR THIRD. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received April 2, 11.30 p.m. New York, April 1. Pat O’Hara won the North v. South golf championship with a score of 200. Clarence Hackney was second with 224, while Kirkwood and Pat Doyle tied for third place with 226.
