BRITISH BY-ELECTION.

A LABOR VICTORY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 31, 8.15 p.m. London, March 31. The East Leicester by-election, which was rendered necessary by Sir G. Hewart being appointed Lord Chief Justice, resulted: G. H. Banton (Labor) 14,062; Marlow (Coalition Liberal) 8710; Allen (Independent Liberal) 3825. Mr. Banton is a prominent local employer, who is something of a dreamer, whose pet scheme is that workmen should down tools in summertime and proceed to the countryside with their wives and families to work at harvesting, returning to the workshops in the autumn. [At the last election Sir Gordon Hewart received 18.024 votes and Mr. Banton 6697.]
