A London cable states that the Kt. Hon. Sir A. J. Balfour, who was recently created a K.G., has accepted an Earldom.

Sir Francis Bell is a passenger by the Athenic, which left Wellington for London on Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mowlem, of Palmerston North, are at present spending a holiday in New Plymouth with their son, Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M.

It is stated that it is probable that Mr. George Elliot will be elected chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, in succession to Mr. Harold Beauchamp. Mr. Elliot is one of the four Government nominees on the board.

Mr. R. C. Esse, for the past nine years manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Inglewood, who is retiring upon superannuation, was on Wednesday night presented with a cheque by members of the Inglewood Club, and best wishes were expressed for his future. Staff-Sergeants Sheppard and Gill, of the staff of the New Plymouth defence office, retire from the service at the end of May, under the retrenchment scheme, which the Government has decided on in connection with the Defence Department.

Mr. H. N. Liardet, the Now Zealand manager of the Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, Ltd., and formerly of Stratford, left 'by the Athenic on a visit to Great Britain, and expects to be absent from the Dominion for six months.

The chairman of the Auckland Harbor Board, Mr. H. D. Heather, has resigned from the board owing to illhealth. Mr. Heather was first elected to the board in 1899, and since 1907 has been continuously a member, as representative of the shipping interests. His length of membership on the board and his term as chairman both constitute a record.
