It is learned authoritatively that President Harding is likely to block the navy officials* plan to concentrate the entire American fleet in the Pacific, the President believing such a step would indicate distrust of Japan, thus jeopardising the friendship engendered by the Arms Conference. Some of the Navy heads are advocating eighteen battleships in the Pacific instead of the present ten, on the ground of economy, pointing out that the navy’s fuel and oil are produced on the west coast, obviating transportation.
