GERMANY’S SHIPS.
RECONSTRUCTION HAMPERED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Berlin, March 28. At the Shpiping Conference, Herr Stimming, general manager of the Nord Deutscher Lloyd Company, said the Government grant of 12,000,000,000 marks for the reconstruction of the mercantile marine had proved inadequate, especially as the cost of shipbuilding in steel had risen from 2000 marks a ton to 82,000 marks. The price of finished vessels had advanced from three to four-fold; nevertheless Germany had already built or bought abroad 280 vessels, aggregating 1,500,000 tons, and 230, aggregating 1,250,000 tons, were under construction. They were still much hampered by the coal shortage. They needed 100,000 tons per month, but were allotted officially only 30,000 tons, only a fraction of which was actually delivered.
