TRENTHAM NOTES. Bj’ Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 29. Mason arrived from the south ihis morning with Gloaming and Pluto, x*. D. Jones with Amythas and Mustard Pot, Longley with Grim Joke, and Scoullar with Moorland. Injuries received by Roseday when being shipped at Lyttelton will prevent his starting at the meeting. Most of the work at Trentham this morning was of a steady nature. JOCKEY’S APPEAL DISMISSED. Christchurch, March 29. The Canterbury District Committee dismissed the appeal of the jockey G. Young, against suspension for one month imposed by the Waimate stewards. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Races at Trentham to-day. Amberley races on Saturday. Dainty Step is said to be very well. A. Reed will be on Still Sea in the Railway. F. Tilley will have Tamatete and Enthusiasm at Awapuni next week. Yankee Jack is now owned by Mr. E. Morse, caretaker of the Bulls course.
Songbird was left in the St. Lege*’ by mistake, but he is a bad “mud” horse anyhow. Ashley Reed’s mount, Quest, is a hot order for the Thompson Handicap, but Silver Peak and Martial Dawn may prove “hard.” The St. Leger will only draw three or four runners, and it looks like a duel between Radiant Light and T> luto. Most of the minor events at Trentham appear to be very open, hut Sir Roseberry, King’s Trumpeter, Red:oguv and Merry Day may be in the money. The entries received for the Auckland R.C. autumn meeting are staggering. There are 78 in the Mangere Handicap, and in practically every race the number engaged is too unweildy to permit of safe racing at Ellerslie. Amongst the entries for the Brighton hurdle race, run at Ellerslie, are Paddington Green, Mangawai, Complex and Active. All, with the exception of Complex, figure in the Autumn Steeples as well. A Victorian writer mentions the late J. Arthur’s superstition regarding inc selection of seven-letter names for horses. Rostrum, winner of the Newmarket Handicap, comes into this category, and no less than 17 Melbourne Cup winners, including Carbine, Chester, Revenue and Sasanof, serve to strengthen the superstition.
