RETRENCHMENT OPPOSED. ■LESSENING CONSCRIPTION PERIOD. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received March 27, 7.50 p.m. Tok io, March 26. Following considerable confusion, as the result of the Opposition’s obstructive tactics against the resolution passed by the lower House urging retrenchment by forty million yens in the army appropriations, the Diet was formally prorogued on Saturday. A resolution was passed with a provision requesting the reduction in the period of conscription to sixteen months. The House of Peers shelved the supplementary Budget of 44,500,000 yens for raising certain colleges to university rank, also a jury system bill.— Auj.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
