AGRICULTURE MATTERS.

THE TARANAKI SOCIETY. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the general committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held at the office of the secretary, Mr. W. P. Okey, on Friday afternoon. There were present: Messrs. W. B. Grant (president) in the chair, R. H. Pigott, W. Hall, W. Rumball, J. Allen, N. W. Hill, H. Ward, A. T. Moore, H. Stonex, C W. Ruebe, G. M. Hamilton, W. McKenzie, S. Vickers, A. E. Washer, H. Sal way, F. W. Cornwall and H. C. Sampson. A deputation consisting of Messrs. Grant and Browne was appointed to interview the Valuer-General on the occasion of his visit to New Plymouth with a request that he grant a reduction in the valuation of the St. Germain's Square sections, in accordance with the provisions of the Valuation of Land Amendment Bill. Mr. T. McWhirter, an exhibitor in the Milking Shorthorn section of the recent show, wrote thanking the president, secretary, ladies in charge of the catering, and officials generally for the courteous treatment received while at the show. It was decided to endorse the action of the Stratford Society in disqualifying an exhibitor in the pig section at its last show. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the question of privileges at the society’s shows. Various committees necessary to attend to the schedule and other details in connection with the Winter Show were appointed. A very cordial vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Harold Olson for his donation of five £5 debentures and interest, and he was elected a life member of the society.

Mr. W r - B. Grant was elected the society’s representative to the annual conference of the New Zealand Council of Agriculture, and Messrs. Grant, Sampson. Hall, Vickers and Rumball were appointed a committee to draft remits on behalf of the society. The chairman said the committee would be glad to receive any remits which members might thinly it advisable for the conference to consider. A discussion arose with reference to the danger of tick-infected cattle being brought into the district, and several of those present expressed d/oufbt as to whether satisfactory precautionary measures were being taken. A letter was received from the Council of Agriculture stating that owing to the lack of support from a financial point of view it hc.d been felt advisable ■to defer the holding of a Royal Show for the time being. Messrs. J. O. Morton (Egmont Village), W. Topless (Waitara) and G. H Topless (Waitara) were appointed mem bers of the society

The application'of the*New Plymouth Association Football Club for the use of the showgrounds for the ensuing season was referred to a sub-committee, with a recommendation that it be granted. A vote of thanks to Messrs. G. Colson, J. Kibby, J. Cleland and S. Guscott for use of paddocks, to Messrs. J. S. Connett, A. Street and H. C. Sampson for providing green feed, Mr. Hamilton for use of car, Mr. F. Cornwall for firewood, and Mr. B. Sampson for cutting same, Mr., Blewman for use of hurdles and copper, to those who gave free labor, and all who in any way assisted the society in connection with the recent show, was carried with acclamation.

Mr. W. Topless, through Mr. J. Allen. very kindly offered the society the use of a number of different varieties of pheasants and other fancy and beautifully plumaged birds for exhibition at the Winter Show, and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. A committee was appointed to arrange for suitably exhibiting the birds. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. F. Ranford for supervising the boys’ and girls’ judging competitions at the recent show. Various suggestions were made with the object of further popularising this sections of the show, and it was decided chat it be a recommendation to the incoming committee to arrange for demonstrations for the competitors.
