PERSONAL.

Dr. J. M. Steward, Anglican Bishop of Alelanesia, is visiting Taranaki and preached at St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth yesterday. A cable message* from Funchal states that ex-Emperor Karl is suffering from fever, and that the doctors are holding a consultation on the case.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Massey) arrived at Auckland yesterday by the Alain Trunk express.—Press Association. A telegram from Wellington records the death of Mr. William Mowat Haunax, ex-general manager of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway Company. He was a director of several Wellington companies. The Dunedin City Council received 28 applications for the position of tramway engineer, and appointed Mr. C. W. Payne, of Auckland, on. six months’ trial.

The death occurred at Hamilton on Friday morning of a well-known and highly-esteemed resident, in the person of Air. Reginald Darke, at the age of fifty-four years.

The appointment is announced of Air. John Baird Thompson as Undersecretary for Jjands, in. succession to Mr. T. N. Brodrick, 0.8. E., 1.5.0., who is retiring on superannuation. Air. E. L. Humphries has received a letter from Air. Nat Millar, in which the writer wishes to be remembered to all old friends in New Plymouth. Air. Alillar is following his profession as a dentist at Batik (England) and has built up a splendid practice. He has a‘> staff of eight in his employ, one being an assistant with both medical and dental degrees. Air. Alillar adds that the family are all fit, and that ne hopes Nat, the eldest boy, will pass into Cambridge University this year.

Air. Edward Knox, general manager of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co., Ltd., Sydney, is now well over the allotted span, and approaching his seventy-fifth year. He is a son of the late Sir Edward Knox, the founder of the company, and for many years its chairman of directors. Mr. Knox, like his eminent brother, Sir Adrian Knox (Chief Justice of Australia), is a native of Sydney.

..^ r ‘ -R* Burns, who recently passed the final medical examinations in Dunedin, has been awarded the Aledical Travelling Scholarship for 1922, and the Batchelor Memorial Aledal for gynecology. Dr. Burns received his primary education at St. Mary’s School. Blenheim, and, after gaining a board scholarship, continued his studies at Marlborough College, and later at Nelson College. Dr. Burns has been appointed assistant to Dr. Drennan, Professor of Pathology at the Otago University.
