CLUB OR PROVINCE?
A RULING, FOR ATHLETES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, March 25. The action of three members of the New Brighton Surf Club in refusing to compete as members of a Canterbury representative team for the Nelson Shield life-saving contest at the New Zealand championship meeting at Wellington last month provoked a lively discussion at a meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association. The members concerned had been selected for the Canterbury team, butjnstead represented their club at the contest, and New Brighton won the shield. The three members,_in correspondence, gave the reasons for their action. During the course of a long discussion it was emphasised that there was a principle at stake, that in sport it was recognised that when a person was selected to represent a province he must do so unless he had sound reasons for refusing. A resolution was adopted that the ex ' planations offered were not considered satisfactory, and that they be censured for their action.
An amendment proposing their eus pension' was defeated.
