RAPID RISE IN BUTTER.

ENCOURAGING PROSPECTS. CHEESE REMAINS FIRM. By Teleffraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 24, 5.5 p.m. London, March 23. Butter has shown extraordinary strength this week. With supplies temporarily short, importers have been able to raise the price daily, till the choicest New Zealand is quoted at 175 s to. 180 s, and Australian IBOs to 1655. Not much actual business has been done at these prices, but considerable speculative business is expected. Retailers raise the price of New Zealand to 22d next week. Some fear this may check consumption, but the public have acquired the butter habit again, and probably the advance will not have a great effect. • Cheese remains firm, though colored is more plentiful, coming back nearly to the level of white. The best New Zealand white is quoted at from 92s to 945, and colored 945. Australian: White 88s, colored 90s. Importations for the two previous weeks are as follow: — BUTTER.
