The Kaponga Dairy Company paid out, on Monday, an advance of one shilling a pound* on butter-fat supplied in February, and a bonus for the first seven months of the season, up to the end of January, making the total payment to that date 13d per lb.

Mr. R. Masters, M.P., recently made representations to the Hon. J. G. Coates for the authorisation of the expenditure of the grant of the Public Works estimates for the Mana and Richmond Roads. The Minister has replied in regard to the Mana Road to the effect that the Inglewood County Council may submit proposals for the expenditure of £lOOO, this being subsidised by the Government £1 for £1 up to £5OO.

On Wednesday the Acting-Minister of Railways and the General Manager heard represntatives of the Hastings Borough Council and the Chamber of Commerce on various matters regarding railway management. The Minister said that a freight tariff would soon be operating in which many anomalies would be wiped out, and the railways would be in a better position to cope with the competition of motor-lorry traffic on the roads.

Some time ago the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce asked the Postal Department to install coin-in-the-slot telephones at the railway station and opposite the post office. The department has replied stating one was being erected at the post office, but it could not see its way to comply with the request for the other one. It pointed out that there was a public telephone in Brougham Street, but a quarter of a mile from the station.

A charge of failing to provide his wife with maintenance was preferred against a young man named Austin Carroll in the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth yesterday. Detective-Sergeant Cooney stated that accused had been arrested in Wellington and was brought to New Plymouth on Thursday night. In the meantime, however, the wife had gone to Auckland, and the police desired a remand, till Thursday, the 30th inst. This was granted. In reply to Mr. A. M. A section of 105 acres at Oakura was offered for sale yesterday by Messrs. Newton King, Jjtd., on behalf of the Crown, under the returned soldiers’ settlement scheme, but no business resulted, and the section was passed in.

Five vessels, the Pakeha, Kaikorai, Kittawa, Rarawa and Huia, with an aggregate tonnage of 13,493, lay within, the seclusion of the port of New Plymouth yesterday. Owing to the deepsea berth being occupied by the Pakeha, the Kaikorai, which arrived from Sydney yesterday morning, had to remain in the stream awaiting the departure of the Pakeha. The Huia was also anchored off to enable the Rarawa to berth. Later in the day, with the sailing of the Rarawa and the Huia, the congestion was relieved somewhat. For sever,-. 1 weeks lately the port has experienced an exceptionally busy period, and it is on such occasions as yesterday that the need for a second wharf is more than ever emphasised. r l his need the harbor board is fully cognisant of, and the work is being expedited with all possible rapidity.

The prohibition rally advertised in today’s issue, to be held in the Town Hall, Urenui, on Monday evening next, should attract a large attendance. The poll on the liquor question is to be taken this year. The lecturer will be Captain W. H. Hawkins, the accredited representative of the New Zealand Alliance. He is an ex-M.P., a retiirned soldier and reputed to be an incisive, forceful speaker and one of the most effective platform men the Alliance has ever had on its staff.

Owing to the unfavorable weather conditions it has been decided to postpone the Amateur Club’s swimming carnival until Saturday next, April 1.
