(By< "Moturoa.”) It required no clairvoyant, crystal-gazer, or palun-reader to foretell that the above meeting would show signs of the slump that is general in things sporting in New Zealamd at the present time, but all things considered the Rangitikei Racing Club did very well to get out without a loss on this week’s meeting, and is therefore to be congratulated. “Gates” were down £lBO, and the tote £12.000, but by the exercise of rigid economy the club pulled through. In these hard times it is as much as any racing club (or anything or anyone else) can do to pay its way, and when the sun shines again—possibly next year—things will surely right themselves.
The Rangitikei meeting has always been a popular one with Taranaki owners and trainers, but this year we missed Percy Johnson, H. Rama, M. Gardner, and several others of “the regulars.” Nevertheless Taranaki owners. trainers and jockeys were there in good numbers, and, as already reported in th* News, they got away with a good share of the stakes offered.
First and foremost of the Taranaki division was Egmont Park, who won the Cup very easily, and with 181bs. extra in the saddle ran a fine race in the Fraser Memorial Handicap on tfce second day. There was a good deal of bumping In the latter event, and the Hawera gelding appeared to be the gi- ••■lo-t. sufferer.
Voluble, who ran a first and a third In spr..it races, although badly treated on actual performances, was better handled by H. Wiggins than by Ashley Reed. The’ latter horseman kept him too far out' of it in the earlier part of the Greatford Handicap to have a chance, though a strong run in the straight carried him into third place, right, on the heels of Passionless and the unfortunate Bestir.
r-ssin’ Through had a comfortable win in the Parewanui Welter, but was cruelly weighted (being sent up 161b5.) In the Pukemaraima Welter on the second day, and had to put up with third place. When you consider that Passin’ Through only beat two horste ing, and the Campfire ■gelding's best effort remarks is evident.
Kareao ran a fine race when he finished third in the Scott Memorial Handicap on Wednesday, and would have paid a great price If he had won. His turn came in the Pukemarama Welter on the second day, but he was sent out second favorite, and the dividend was-mothing to enthuse over.
Mr. M. Hartigan had Skylight at the meeting, and the Campfire gelding's best effort was when he ran second to Egmont Park *n the Cup. He was the outsider of the field, and returned a fine second dividend. His subsequent efforts, fourth in tte Clifton Welter and sixth in the Fraser Memorial Handicap, were not so 'attractive, but he has only been in work a fev£ weeks, and his running under the circumstances was wonderful. He is one of the most promising middle distance horses of the new brigade in Taranaki. Amongst the less successful ones were Velociform, who raced well each day; Kato, who struck a hot proposition In Springtide (Autumnus—Ebb Tide) in the Sanson Hurdles; and Cold Steel, who was not suited by the holding track.- Also, it might be mentioned, Simonides and Eerie were backed and beaten on the second day. During the meeting the Press were only once acquainted officially with the result of inquiry into indifferent horsemanship, so it may be inferred that Mr. MacMahon saw nothing else to cavil at. In the writer’s opinion there was a good deal of rough riding, and in two instances the practice of opening out to let favorites through on the rails was noticeable. Whether there was anything ne J hind this business it is not policy to say, but such tactics leave a bad taste in one’s mouth. While on this matter it might be mentioned that a Taranaki horseowner, with a horse running at Bulls, cornered “Moturoa” off, and accused him of hitting the stipes below the belt. If my friend is of the opinion that the stipes are earning their money I would like to have his honest opinion of the racing at Bulls on Thursday, which I contend was characterised by rough riding, to say the least of it. Whizz Bang looked and ran well each day at Bulls, and Alfonso Attwood will soon lead him in a winner. Possibly it will be at Awapuni, where the black gelding is leniently treated in the hurdles. Passionless was favorite each day in the sprints, and, though the going was against top weights, she fluked a win on the second day. Her form is now fully exposed, and the handicappers have long unemories. Bestir, who has carried welter weights in hack company with some success, was second each day, and on Thursday should have bepn home on the Dit. Never a kid’s mount, Bestir is hard to handle, but -he is a good horse, and one worth following. Pam got amongst the winners on Thursday, but she was lucky. Without some help from the opposition she would have finished behind Released and Whizz Bang. Released was knocked all over the course, and Whizz Bang, who carried 81bs. overweight, met with interference at the home bend.
