CARNIVAL DAY.
STRATFORD A. AND P. GYMKHANA. ENJOYABLE DAY’S AMUSEMENT. DETAILS OF EVENTS. The carnival committee of the Stratford A. and P. Association deserve to be congratulated on the success that attended the carnival held yesterday on the show grounds in aid of the society’s funds. It was a very ambitious programme, comprising running, cycling, Highland, trotting and other events; but the result proved that they were justified, as the public had an enjoyable day, and the funds of the society should benefit considerably.
The weather was kind in the morning, and consequently the public gathered in good numbers, and though some heavy showers late in the afternoon did mar the enjoyment to a certain extent, the committee had made such complete arrangements that the whole of the lengthy and varied programme was run off well to time. This demanded good organisation, and' was a tribute to the committee, of which Mr. G. Sangster was chairman and Mr. A. J. Barr was secretary. Fields in all the events were good, and competition was keen, the finishes being very close. Mr. D. Malone, as starter, in all the events despatched his fields well, whilst the work of the handicappers— Messrs. C. Burke (athletic) and J. F. Butler (trotting)—deserves mention. The judges—Messrs. R. Masters, and J. W. McMillan (Mayor of Stratford), athletic events; H. E. Abraham, trotting; Short, dancing and P. Aitken (referee tug-of-war)—and Messrs. Gaffaney and Petrie (timekeepers) all attended to their duties. The trotting and .tug-of-war were undoubtedly the most popular events of the afternoon. In the former fields were very large, while the latter attracted six teams.
The catering arrangements were in the hands of the ladies, and were up to the usual high standard, whilst the ladies also had a busy time at the soft drinks and refreshment stalls. There were several side-shows, among them being one run in the interests of the society, the Vinpeppo Circus. This was organised by Mr. Bert Vinsen, and the procession to the showgrounds, with the performing horses, dogs, etc., made a most imposing spectacle. The circus gave several performances to crowded houses, the trained horses, dogs and ducks giving evidence of the patience and ability of Mr. Vinsen, whilst the fancy dancing and the antics of the clowns gave much amusement. Mr. J. Lovell, of Westown, assisted in this show. A special feature was the circus band, with its jazz music. During the afternoon the Eltham Brass Band rendered an enjoyable musical programme. This provided perhaps the most amusement of the afternoon. There were two contestants, and as they came on the track the audience were convulsed. One machine was an Oldsmobile of 1902 model, with a tiller steering gear, the first motor-car to come to Stratford, whilst the other was almost as old.
