MEAT EXPORT LEVY.
A HAWERA PROTEST. AGAINST AUCTIONEERS’ ACTION. . - i In connection with the auctioneers collecting tax on meat at Addington, Mr. G. V. Pearce has sent the following telegram to Mr. David Jones, chairman of the Meat Pool Board, Wellington: “Urge board ,to strongly protest agamet illegal action of auctioneers at Addington deducing export license levy, evidently done to prejudice producers against the board.” In an interview with a Star representative, Mr. Pearce stated that the Meat Export Control Bill only provides for an export license of Id for each carcase of sheep and 2d for cattle’ actually exported, and as 50 per cent, of the stock sold at Addington would be for local consumption it is dear that the tax should not be levied. Mr. Pearce warns producers that the tax is not legal under the Act. “In my opinion,” he added, “in a few months’ time freights are to be rearranged by the Meat Board, and the producer will get at least 30 times the amount of the levy in the way of benefit in the reduction of freighte.”—Star.
