FARMERS’ DIFFICULTIES.
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY. VISIT THIS MONTH. There seems to be some uncertainty in Taranaki regarding the duties of Mr. F. W. Flannagan, the valuation commission appointed to inquire into the position of dairy farmers and the order in which he will consider the difficulties of the famers which were the cause of his appointment as a commission. To make the position clear to the farmers, Mr. R. Masters wrote to Mr. Flannagan for information and on Saturday received the following reply;—
“With reference to your letter of the 9th inst., inquiring as to the scope of my commission with the dairy farmers mortgages, I have the honor to inform you that my duty is to report on the alleged financial difficulties of dairy farmers, and the extent to which the daily industry is affected thereby, and to mediate between mortgagees and mortgagors in cases where there appears to be a probability of effecting satisfactory arrangements by mutual consent of both parties. I intend visiting the Taranaki district towards the close of the present month. The centres where and dates on which I may be interviewed by mortgagors will be notified in due course. There is no reason, however, w-hy mortgagors should not communicate with me meanwhile, and thus assist in expediting the work in order that I may obtain from them particulars of their mortgagee in advance.”
