THE Proper Feeding of Dairy Cows. VECjhitofr No cow can produce milk sufflcient to !ma^e her profitable nn- ) less s he receives a sufficient quantity of food of the right quality. Wyafgreygas Every farmer who studies this question of feeding will be well repaid for his trouble. r , PAL AT ABILITY.—Due regard should be given to the palatability of the food given. It stimulates the appetite and aids digestion. A cow will always give better return* if she relishes her food. Forage should, be cut early and not exposed to sunshine any longer than is absolutely necessary. • ORDER OF FEEDING.—Strict regularity should be observed in both feeding and milking, in order to secure the greatest degree of contentment in the herd. If cows are fed at stated intervals* they will not worry for food until the time for feeding arrives. Feeding twice a day will bring better returns than more frequent and wasteful feeding. HANDLING THE HERD.—It is quite as important in order to secure a large yield of milk, that the cow or herd be handled prop ly as that proper feeding be practiced. The herd, as a whole, should always be moved slowly. Never hurry a cow or strike her, or speak loudly or harshly. A gentle voice and a caressing touch are quite an potent os is digestible protein. If you handle the cowa so that they are fond of you, you have learned one of the most important lessons that lead to profitable dairying. If you have not been in the habit of caressing the cows, the time to begin the practice is when they approach the time of calving, as it IS at that particular time that they take kindly to grooming and to gentle rubbing of ; the udder. •NAME THE COWS.—Each cow should have a name, which should always be spoken when approaching her. This one point counts for much in the successful handling of a herd. Write for Pamphlet, “The Proper Feeding of Live v-i Stock.” N.Z. CATTLECAKE & OIL COY., Ltd.
