WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) March 17. Mr. Ben Bodin, who has been in the railway service for over 40 years, retired a few weeks ago on superannuation. Recently he was entertained by his fellow employees and friends. During the evening Mr. Huse (stationmaster) presented to Mr. Bodin, on behalf of the men, two easy chairs and a case of pipes, and a handbag to Mrs. Boden. Various toasts and speeches, intermingled with song, brought a pleasant evening to a close. Mr. H. Ashworth, who is leaving Waitara to take up home missionary work in the Ohura district, is to preach a farewell sermon in the Waitara Methodist Church on Sunday next. Mr. A. H. Hawkins, local manager of the Bank of New Zealand, has received definite word his time of retirement takes place on May 31. It is Mr. Hawkins’ intention to reside in New Plymouth, where he has acquired a property. The local drapery establishments, in common with those in other Taranaki towns, closed on Monday last for the purpose of a combined picnic at Ngaere Gardens. Only two local employees attended the picnic. Some journeyed to New Plymouth in preference, and others stopped at home. At the monthly meeting of the Plunket Society it was reported that the local branch is a decided success. A steady increase was reported in the number of visits to the rooms, and also to homes, and it is very gratifying to know the mothers are realising the benefit of having somewhere to go for advice in regard to “baby's welfare.”

Archdeacon Evans will institute the Rev. Penewhare Netana as assistant mission curate in St. John’s Church, Waitara, on Sunday next, at 3 p.m. The service will be in Maori. Mr. Augustus Webb, at one time private secretary to the Bishop of Winchester, and recently appointed organiser of the central fund of the Anglican diocese of Auckland, arrives in Waitara on Saturday, March 18, and wiP preach in St. John’s Church on Sunday evenL.&
