THE SULTAN BECOMES KING. NEW ERA INAUGURATED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Cairo, March 16. Following the new charter of liberties agreed to by the British Government, a rescript by the Sultan announces that Egypt is now an independent sovereign State and the Sultan becomes the King of Egypt. The irreconcilable elements caused serious disorders in the streets. They damaged lamps and trees in the avenues. The cavalry were called out. The Sultan has written to the Premier as follows: “God has graciously permitted the attainment of Egypt’s independence at our hands. We are grateful to God and hereby announce to the world. Egypt’s independence and sovereignty. We have taken the title of King in order to ensure the country’s dignity and international status, and hoge to-day will inaugurate an era which will restore Egypt’s grandeur.”
