DAMAGE BY FIRE.
A HOME DESTROYED. By Talegraph.—Press Association. Waimate, Last Night. A fire occurred at Redcliff this morning at 8.30, when a seven-roomed house owned and occupied by Robert Geddes was totally destroyed. Mrs. Geddes, with two children, was alone in the house at the time. She was rendering down fat in the over, when the fat caught fire. She tried to drag the fat outside, but had to desist. The flames quickly obtained a hold, and there were no means of combating the fire. Geddes, and the farm hands were away. The house, furniture and outbuildings were totally destroyed. The insurance details are not available. DAMAGE TO A SHOP. Dunedin, Last Night. A fire in confectionery premises in McLaggan Street this evening resulted in the destruction of the rear portion of the building, while the main portion downstairs and the top storey were slightly damaged by smoke. The building and stock are insured with the Phoenix Office, but the amount is not known. The owners, Stewart and Sons, estimate their loss at about £l5OO. FLOUR MILL DESTROYED. Christchurch, March 16. The Kaiapoi mills, a four-story building, was completely destroyed by fire early this morning, through an outbreak due to the heating of a pulley block. About 20 tons of flour were destroyed while 1100 sacks of wheat were so damaged as to be practically useless. The mills belonged to the estate of the late Richard Evans, The insurances were £lOOO on the stock and £5BOO on the mill apd plant in the New Zealand office.
