TIMBER INDUSTRY

A DEARTH OF ORDERS WORKING HOURS REDUCED. By Telegraph.—Pres? Association. Taumarunui, Last Night. A general meeting of representatives of the sawmill industry was held here to-day. It was convened by the Main Trunk Timber Trade Protection Guild, and was attended by over fifty executive representatives of mills between Thames, Rotorua and Hunterville. Matters of grave importance to the industry and the community were considered. The main difficulty facing the industry is the dearth of orders and the slackness of trade. After discussion a motion was adopted reducing the hours of work by closing down on Saturdays, and if the slump continues a further reduction of working hours may be necessary. This measure was adopted as less likely to cause hardship than closing the mills down. It was decided that should any appreciable reduction in production costs be attaieed by the contemplated reduction in wages the benefit would be given immediately to the consumer by reduced prices.
