THE OVERSEAS TRADE. A NEW RECORD. With a gross tonnage of 9540 the liner Leitrim, which was berthed at New Plymouth yesterday morning, is the biggest vessel to enter the port so far. Her length is 492 feet overall. She is the fifty-sixth liner to come to New Plymouth and the eighth this year. The Leitrim is a comparatively new steamer, having been -built in 1915 for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand and is one of the Irish County line, which includes the Roscommon and other vessels of the type. The Leitrim was built for the general cargo and frozen meat trade and has made several trips to New Zealand, having loaded at the Waitara roadstead last year. The vessel was one of the first geared turbine ships to trade to New Zealand and develops 1500 shaft horsepower. The vessel was drawing 22ft Y 4in. forward and 22ft Ilin aft when brought alongside by the harbormaster (Captain Waller). She is lifting a Waitara cargo of frozen meat. The Leitrim’s arrival marks another stage of progress at the port. . Visitors who went on board yesterday included the chairman (Mr. Newton King) and members of the New Plymouth Harbor Board. Closely following the Leitrim will be two other overseas vessels, the Wkiotapu from‘Pacific coast ports, due on Sunday, and the Shaw Savili steamer Pakeha, which is -’xpeettt about the middle of next week.
