MAKETAWA PICNIC.
/ ——— I A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. RESULTS OF THE SPORTS. •The annual picnic in connection with the Makstawa Dairy Factory was held in Mt. A. Marshall’s paddock opposite the factory yesterday. The paddock lends itself admirably for the purpose, being well sheltered. This pioved very welcome, for the weathel was showery throughout the day, culminating in heavy rain just after the conclusion.
The committee had made complete arrangements for the sports, and everything passed off smoothly, those present thoroughly enjoying themselves. The hospitality of the Maketaka people was again in evidence, the modest admission fee also including luncheon and afternoon tea, provided in a spacious marquee by a strong ladies’ committee. The children were specially catered for, the sum of £5 being allocated for their races, which were controlled by Messrs. W. Wagstaff and J Reeve. The chDdren were also admitted free and were entertained to morning and afternoon tea. Despite the weather there was a good attendance, among those present being Messrs. J. Sutherland (Mayor of Inglewood) and J. Brown, chairman of directors.
There was keen competition and close finishes in all the events, a tribute to the work of the handicappers, Messis. J. Stephens and W. Brown. Mr. 1. Renowden, as starter, controlled his fields well, whilst the judging was in tte capable hands of Messrs. J. Brown, Hl Trimifle, A. Marshall, A. Lawrence and D. Wright. The committee, of which Mr. J. Stephans was chairman,, deserves to be congratulated on the success achieved, a special word of praise being due to the secretary, who proved the right man for the position.
