FIRES.
TILE WORKS DESTROYED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Taumarunui, March 15. At 5 o’clock this morning fire broke out in Winstone’s roof and tile works. The drying sheds and structure work round eight kilns were destroyed and the main buildings reduced to ashes. The 'fire had a strong hold when the alarm was given, but the brigade succeeded in saving the engine-sheds and valuable machinery, including a new 100 horse-power boiler. Twenty thousand tiles were destroyed. The same premises were burnt to the ground in October, 1919. The damage is estimated at £5OOO above the insurances. SALOON AND SHOPS GUTTED. Hastings, March 15. A fire at midnight in the buildings on sections leased b5 r the Railway Department in Station Street gutted Hen.nah’s three-table billiard saloon, Kummers’ seedsman’s shop and H. B. Heald’s agency office. The adjoining premises on either side, occupied by Kessell (boot shop), and Charles (fruiterer) were slightly damaged. The destroyed buildings were the -property of \V. W. Fitzpatrick. The origin ot the fire is unknown. The insurances are not yet available.
The property is within the brick area and the amended conditions of lease now necessary will necessitate the erection of substantial buildings.
