EGMONT COUNTY.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Further business at Tuesday’s meeting of the Egmont County Council was: — Cr. Ferguson, in moving that the chairman’s honorarium should be £lOO, referred to the work done by the chairman, remarking that by taking notice of councillors with outside experience he had improved the position of the county, and with a little more time would place it in a good position. Cr. O’Brien seconded. The chairman pointed out that he had held the position for eighteen months and had received no honorarium. Cr.’ O’Brien referred to the need for the chairman devoting more time to county affairs, pointing out that it was not advisable that the chairman should live outside the county. The chairman indicated that : there was a probability he would not seek reelection.

Crs. Chapman and Brophy were appointed to consult the settlers on the Ruakere Road as to whether they were still desirous of raising the loan for the road.

Cr. O'Brien said that the settlers had delayed over twelve months about th; matter, and he personally had no sympathy with them, as they had been considering the question of seceding from the council.

Cr. Tosland reported that he had made satisfactory arrangements regarding the erection of telephone posts on the roads in the riding. The tender of J. Clements at 4/6 per yard was accepted for the supply of •200 yards of beach boulder stone near the Ara wh ata Road. Cr. O’Brien stressed the necessity’ for having a Suitable building to house their machinery. He understood the financial position would enable a shed to be built. The way the machinery was kept in the open was a disgrace. Cr. Tosland pointed out that a committee had been set up to deal with the matter and now a site had been secured they should push ahead with the work On the motion of Cr. O’Brien it was resolved that the overseer prepare plans and that the committee meet and submit a report to next meeting. It was resolved to expend £5O in improving the Pungarehu Road. The overseer was authorised to proceed with the erection of the Oeo bridge on the Oeo Road, and also a small bridge nearby. The Oaoiti bridge near the Oaonui factory is also to receive attention; also the Parihaka bridge on the. upper Parihaka Road, and a culvert on the Kiri Road.
