SOUTHERN MARKETS. SHARP RISE IN POTATOES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Bast Night. There is little change from the week-end to report. Wheat is coming forward in henry quantities, but millers are buying sparingly. Rejections as milling wheat are still heavy, but there is brisk trade in fowl wheat, the North Island buying freely on a basis of 4s 70 to 4ft 9d. The oat market remates unchanged. The cocksfoot and ryegrass markets continue firm. White clover Is worth Is to Is 3d to farmers. Cowgrass is not yet coming to hand, but Blenheim advices mention lid to Is Id aa nominal values, and the new season’s crop ia coming in there. It is rumored that an enquiry has been received from England. Peas remain fairly firm, and there are buyers for partridga at Ts 3d to 7s 9d. White ivories are worth 6s 6d to 6s 9d, and Prussian bluM 6s Gd ta 6s 9d. Potatoes for Immediate delivery have risen sharply during the week, and several parcels have been sold for the north at £6 to £6 sft per ton f.o.b. South Island, equal to £4 15a to farmers.. The rise relates practically ta March delivery. Tubers, main crop, are worth £3 10s to £3 12s 6d at wayside stations. LONDON MARKETS. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLBD REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated March IL from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, LondonMEAT. Stocks of oM| season's mutton and lamb small, and with short supplies of new season's, demand continues good at fine prices. It is felt in some quarters that with larger immediate arrivals prices may weaken. Present quotations are:— New Zealand Mutton.—Old season’s: Light-weigl-t, March 11, 7%d to 7%d; March 4, 7>,4d to 7%d; February 25, THd to 7%«L Medium-weight, March 11, GMd. Extra heavyweight,' March 11, 6d. New Zealand Lamb.—Old season’s: Llrfitwelght, March 11, lOd; March 4, Ibftd, February 25. 10%d to 10%d. Heavy-waightt March 11, 9%d; March 4, 9%d; February 25, lOd. New season’s: North Island, March 11, ll%d; March 4, lid to Is o%d; February 25, ll%d to la. No Canterbury available. New season's mutton not offlcially quoted, but for quantity available, Hd per lb. more being obtained. New Zealand Beef.—No demand. Nominal quotations are: Hinds, March 11, 4 l-Bd| March 4, 4 l-8d; February 25, 4d. Fores: March 11, 2%d; March 4, 2%d; February 25, 3d. Argentine Chilled Beef.—Large supply. Hinds: March 11, sd; March 4, 5Hd; February 25, 5 l-Bd. Fores: March 11, 3V&d; March 4, 3%d; February 25, 3%d BUTTER. Market firm, with good demand, and MJlers to-day asking higher prices; in cases of New Zealand up to 144 s per cwt. (Is 3%d per lb.), but no transactions yet reported nt this figure. Official quotations are:— New Zealand.—Salted: March 11, 140 s »o 142 s per cwt. (Is 3d to Is 3%d per lb.) ; March 4,138 s to 142 s per cwt. (Is 2Mtd to is 3%d per lb.) ; February 25. 136 s to 140 s per cwt. (Is 2Vfcd to Is 3d per lb.). New Zealand.—Unsalted: March 11, 140 s to 144 s per cwt. Market dull and declining, owing to falling off in consumptive demand. Present quotations are New Zealand.—-March 11, colored, 94s to 96s per cwt. (lOd to 10%d per lb.) ; white, 81s to 83s per cwt. (B%d to 9d per lb.). Marcii 4, colored, 98s to 100 s per cwt. (lOfed to 10%d per lb.) ; white, S4s to 8«s per owt. (9d to 9>4d per lb.). February 25, colored, OSs to 102 s per cwt. (10‘Ad t< lid per lb.) ; white, 86s to 90s per cwt. (9»4d to 9%d per lb.). WOOL. Sales continue, and with strong support from Home and foreign sections, bulk of offerings selling, and values ’ show improvement on opening; current rate being not more than par to 5 per cent, below January figures for both merino and crossbred. This week B.A.W.R.A. offerings have consisted of: Australian merino greasy. 5500 bales .scoured 2800 bales, crossbred greasy 3900 tMries, scoured 1300 bales. New Zealand: Crossbred greasy 3400 bales, scoured 1000 bales, slipc 1150 bales. INGLEWOOD SALES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a good muster at Newton King. Ltd.’s mart on Saturday, when between 30 and 40 pigs of various sizes were sold nt the following rates: Weaners from 7a to !)«. slip” 15s, and good stores and porkers 35s to 41a. In poultry cocks and hens made from 2s 6d to 3s 3d, and ducks Is 6d. Hinan fence pos’s sold at Is 9d.
