DISTRICT NEWS.

LOW GARTH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The weather up till lately has been very* close and trying, and pastures and crops were in need of rain, which has done a vast amount of good. The season generally has been one of the best experienced for many years; grass is very plentiful, and the harvest crops have been very good. Unfortunately turnips and swedes will shortly have to be replaced by something else, as the prevalence o-f chib root makes it almost impossible to get a good crop. Ground that has never before been ploughed seems to be subject to this disease almost as much as old ground. The Finperty Road school children joined the Eltham school excursion to New Plymouth on March 2. About siii'-ty-five children and parents journeyed by motor lorries to Eltham and caught the train. The hour chosen for the departure of the train was ridict ’.ously early, which meant that the local children had to assemble at half-past six, and do their milking before that. It seems a pity that some representations cannot be made to< the Railway Department to give the country people better treatment. During the whole of the day rain fell continuously and spoilt what would otherwise have been an enjoyable day’s outing. At New Plymouth the arrangements were very bad indeed, and it was not until half the officials and children were wet through that dry quarters were obtained. However, the people on the whole looked on the bright side and trusted for better luck next time. The local settlers had a wind uh harvest home by having a day nnf- •** the Opunake beach. About fifty set“ tlers and children made the journey by motor lorry and car last Saturday, and had a very enjoyable day’s outing, arriving home again at about half-past five.
