SUPREME COURT.

A RE-TRIAL REFUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice Stringer refused an applicatioiK by Stuart Christie for a new trial on a charge of unlawfully carnally knowing a girl of 13, a charge on which he was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. The application was made on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence. GISBORNE SESSIONS. Gisborne, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Henry Edward Dennett was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and again declared an habitual criminal for attempted rape. Tukawhina Reihama was sentenced to three years’ probation for the theft of £8 from the person. Delivering sentence, Mr. Justice Reed said young Maoris released on probation were under the impression they had won their eases and were inclined to swank on the results of the trial. If accused had been a European he would have got probation, so he did not like to make a racial distinction. There was the further fact that accused served at the war. Accused would require to be prohibited for three years and to pay the costs of the prosecution £23.
