BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) March U. The month!j' meeting of the Waitara Borough Council was held on Wednesday. Present: The Mayor, ami Councillors Blair, Jaggs, E. C. Jones, Johns and Ogle. An apology was received from Cr. Rennie. The electric lighting committee reported having ordered a new Scott producer for the power station. They also stated that although the increase to one shilling a unit had been made the electric lighting account did not seem to be any better off. It was resolved to notify owners of poplar trees adjacent to the waterworks intake to remove same. The borough foreman is to !be asked to give an estimate of the cost o e piping the ditch which runs alongside the footpath in front of the canning works. Cr. Johns moved that a request be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works, urging the speeding up of the construction of the Stratford-Ongarue railway. He said he was not aware before the Chamber of Commerce meeting what a large tract of country was beneficial to this district. —Seconded by Cr. Jaggs and carried.
On the motion of Cr. Johns, Messrs. Letadorf and W. D. Wilkinson are to be asked for recommendations as to what steps are necessary to stop river erosion, these two gentlemen having had experience in that kind of work. The matter of cleaning up the Waitara cemetery was left in the hands of the cemetery committee. The clerk remarked that the worst feature was the overgrowth on the graves. The tender of Mr. F. Calgher for the right to graze on ground behind the grandstand on the Camp Reserve at a rental of £2 was accepted. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., held a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. Judgment was given for plaintiff iii the following cases: —F. Wolfe v. Harry Falkiner, £l4 8s 6d, cost? 695; J. R. Bennett v. Jas. Joe Toss, ■ £ll 7s Bd, costs 645; Rennie and Co. v. Jas. Marsh, £lO 8s 2d, costs 70s. • ' GENERAL. Word was received on Friday that as the liner Leitrim’s draught was such as enables her to berth at New Plymouth, she will go to that port instead of coming to Waitara roadstead. The new asphalt tennis court on the Domain is now completed, and will be played on during the winter months. A sub-committee has been formed to control the court.
