CONCRETE TRACKS.
EXPERIMENT IN ROAD MAKING. . An experiment in road construction has been undertaken by the- Cessnock Shire Council (New South Wales), which has, on the recommendation o! its engineer, decided to lay concrete tract's on one of its main roads. The tracks will be each 30in. in width, and instead of the customary rough surface full of ruts, cars and other vehicles will be able to travel speedily and comfortably on a smooth, hard way, laid tc give ample room for all wheels. It it claimed that this will be the first road of its kind in the Commonwealth, and if the experiment is successful the experimental half-mile tracks will be oontinned along the busy Cess nock- KurriMaitland Road to the Municipal boundary of West Maitland. The engineer claims that concrete tracks can be laid at one-third of the cost of the metalled road, that they would bo much more serviceable and cheaper to maintain. He anticipates that they would need no expenditure for maintenance for several years, and under the new conditions the gravelled centre and sides would need only a portion of the present coat of upkeep.
