WAITARA.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) March 10. i The monthly meeting of the Waitara School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr. T. R. Ford presiding. The headmaster reported that the roll number is now 347, and the attendance last week averaged 325.6. During February Messrs. Glesson and Syme had paid a visit to the children’s agricultural plots, and the physical instructor, Mr. Roydhouse, had also paid a visit and reported favorably on the exercises carried out. The headmaster also reported that he was getting the boys to improve the school grounds. At present they were digging the ground in front of the school for flower beds, so as to improve the surroundings. To give more room it was necessary that the flagpole should be shifted.—Authority was given for this. It was decided to secure a good attendance shield, to be held each week by the class who gained the highest average attendance. It was decided to have a roll of honor compiled of old pupils of the school who served in the great war. Messrs. Nosworthy and Huse were deputed to get the names. It was resolved to obtain levels and price for preparing a tennis court in the eastern portion of the ground. The headmaster was voted a sum of £s_ to procure framed pictures of some artistic merit for decorating the interior of the school. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. It was stated that a metallic circuit was being installed in the hew exchange at Uruti and Waitara, i and Awakino transmission facilities are being inquired into. So far as a metalI tic circuit at Waitara is concerned, it I was considered by the department that the existing cable accommodation is sufficient for the needs. It was resolved to again point out to the department the antiquated system in use here, and the inconveniences that were being suffered. The application for fortnightly sittings of the Magistrate’s Court was rejected by the Justice Department, considering the business was not sufficient to warrant it. It was resolved to urge upon the Minister the desirability of court work arising in this district being der.lt with at Waitara. A Wellington firm wrote in response to a letter from the Chamber stating that they had not a suitable boat available for Waitara trade. The matter of endeavoring to re-es-tablish Home loading of liners in the roadstead was left in abeyance in the meantime. An appreciative letter is to be sent to the Minister for Public Works jn the excellent progress made in metalling Mt. Messenger and the lower Awakino deviation, and that it be a suggestion to have the Valley Road metalled simultaneously with the formation. GENERAL ITEMS.
