NEW AERO ENGINE.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS HELD. London, Feb. 17. Lord Gorell, Under-Secretary of State for Air, and other distinguished people to-day inspected the action of the new Napier 1000 horse-power aeroplane engine, weighing 22001 b. which it is claimed will revolutionise the carrying power and cost of aeroplanes. To-day the highest-powered aero engines range from 450 to 520 horsepower. The 1000 h.p. standard is a remarkable advance, not merely because of the extra power claimed, but because it is obtained at such a cheap price in weight. The new engine weighs just over 21b per horse-power, and leads the way in the race for light but highpowered engines, in which all European and American makers are competing. M. Louis Breguet, a noted French designer, has an engine of 1250 h.p. on the benches, and claims that engines with a strength of from 4000 to 6000 h.p. are being designed.
