X THE | Proper Feeding of Dairy Cows. 0 Be faithful, gentle and human to your cows, and you p- will soon discover possibilities in each individual that you S never dreamed were possible. The average annual yteld of butter-fat in Denmark is about X 2701b5. per cow. In New Zealand it is about 170 lbs. The difference g represents a loss to this Dominion of £‘5,C90,000 per annum. This S is due to tile fact that we have very few tested cows, too many X “scrub” bulls, and our cows are not properly fed and cared for. It X lias been estimated that by proper feeding the present yield could X. be increased by fully 20 per cent, in one season. This would represent an increased revenue of £2,000,000 per annum—a sum that would foe very acceptable. * / We have instances of dairy herds averaging 3OOlbs. per annum and up to 4001bs. What effort is being made to make this mor© general? The function of the Dairy Cow is to produce milk, but she cannot do so unless properly cared for and fed the wherewithal to do it. For high milk production it is absolutely necessary to feed a concentrated ration in order to bn ?r e the food the cow consumes. Experiments have shown that co<». . when fed a properly balanced ration, remain in good physical, condition, while those fed an unbalanced ration lose greatly in flesh and milk production. Carbo hydrates cannot take the place of Protein. The rational feeding of dairy cows is of greater importance than is realised. Proper feeding not only meets the need, but seems to stimulate milk production and increase the secretive power of the animal. HIGH MILK PRODUCTION HAS NEVER BEEN SECURED OTHER THAN BY FEEDING.
