DISTRICT NEWS.

MANGATOKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The recent rain was most beneficial to farmers and very welcome to those whose water supply was running low It has been an ideal season right through; quantities of feed have kept up the milk yield, and the test is above the usual for the time of year. The Eltham and country schools chose a very wet day for their annual picnic at New Plymouth last week. It rained the whole <.ay without ceasing. The only thing not damp was the children’s spirits; they were out to enjoy themselves, which they did as all happy, healthy children should. Owing to the change of teachers just at the time, Mangatoki children did not participate in the fun. No doubt their picnic will come later. Mr. Bary left last week, expecting to take up his duties in his new school on Friday. Our local school is at present in charge of a relieving teacher, pending the appointment of a head teacher. The school has over a hundred on the roll now, and if this is kept up till- the end of this month the school will go‘ up a grade. Mrs. Penny’s little son Eric, aged four, had the" misfortune to be kicked in the face by a horse last week. The little fellow was unconscious when picked up and Dr. Cooper had to be called in. We are pleased to hear the child was not so much injured as at first thought.
