SEAMEN’S WAGES.
REDUCTIONS IN AUSTRALIA. HINT OF TROUBLE. By Telegraph. —Press Assn. —Copyright. Received March 9, 10.25 p.m. Melbourne, March 9. It is stated (’ I the shipowners propose to ask the engineers to agree to a reduction in wages of from 30s to 10s monthly according to rank, cooks 13% and stewards 395. If the conference fails to arrive at an agreement the owners will submit their claims to the Arbitration Court. Mr. Walsh, president of the Seamen s Union, addressing the Bench in the Arbitration Court on the minutes of the proposed award in the case of the Seamen’s Union against the Treasurer of Queensland, said that if the seamen of New South Wales did not get their rights they themselves would deal with the owners.—Aus.-N.Z.
