ELTHAM.

ANOTHER FIRE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) March 8. Eltham was again visited by fire at four o’clock this morning, the premises owned by Messrs. Hurrell Bros., Hawera, and occupied by Mr. C. R. K. Cumming, coachbuilder and wheelwright, being totally destroyed. One of the firemen at the brigade’s station was awakened by falling debris and gave the alarm, the nightwatch man having gone off duty. Among the paints and' varnish the fire soon obtained a strong hold, and by the time the brigade turned out the building was doomed to destruction. Some anxiety was felt for the band room adjoining, but owing to the brigade’s attention it escaped damage. This is the second fire recorded in Ell.ham within a month, the town not having had a fire of any consequence for ten years previous. As was the case during the previous fire, the water pressure was very poor, and in consequence the brigade had no chance with the hold the fire had obtained. The insurances are: Messrs. Hurrell Bros. £l4O in State Fire office on building and £l5O in Royal Exchange on plant. Mr. Cumming £5OO in United Insurance Co. on stock. Mr: Cumming states that he estimates his loss at £250, while if is difficult to say what Messrs. Hurrell Bros.’ loss is.
