A UNION’S FUNDS.
EMBEZZLEMENT ALLEGED. EX-SECRETARY CHARGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Nigbt. John Arbuckle, a prominent figure in Labor circles, and until recently secretary of the New Zealand Miners’ Federation, stood his preliminary trial today on a charge of embezzling £4SP, the property of the Coal, Gold and Shale Quarry Workers’ Union. Accused was arrested in Sydney. Mr. O’Rourke, secretary and treasurer of the Miners’ Federation, said that when he took over accused asked how things were, and he said everything was all right. No moneys were haned witness, all having been banked. Regarding various levies made by affiliated unions for assistance to miners, one was made for the Broken Hill miners on strike, and after the accused’s departure various discrepancies were discovered. Arbuckle had previdusly been asked about a missing £5O. He said be would be back in three weeks from Australia, but he did not return and was arrested.
