WAR MEMORIAL.

PROPOSED GATES AT PARK. CO OPERATION OF EX-SOLDIERS. SPORTS BODIES TO ASSIST. Following the discussion on the question of a war memorial for New Plymouth, which took place at Tuesday’s meeting of the Pukekura Park Board, the Returned Soldiers’ Association executive at last night’s meeting appointed delegates to cooperate with the representatives of the board and the sports committee, who are to wait on the Mayor to discuss the matter. The delegates are Mr. A. M. MacDiarmid (president), Dr. Home and Mr. G. Roper (secretary). The discussion at the meeting of the Pukekura Park Board would indicate that there is some talk among returned soldiers of initiating a movement of their own to erect a soldiers’ memorial to their fallen comrades failing anything else being done. Enquiry reveals that the memorial has been the subject of much discussion among returned men lately, and that if there is no other scheme in view it is certain a proposal will be put before the annual meeting of the association to be held shortly in favor of a memorial being erected under a movement to be entirely confined to returned soldiers. Previously the returned soldiers had adhered to the view expressed at the first public meeting, that it was not their function to organise a scheme, but that they would be willing to co-operate in any citizens’ movement. At a meeting of the New Plymouth Sports Ground Committee last night the question of the proposed war memorial was brought forward by a letter from the Pukekura Park Board forwarding a copy of the resolution passed at its meeting the previous evening. The chairman (Mr. A. L. Humphries) considered that the proposal to erect gates at the park provided about the best war memorial that could be decided upon, as they could be seen by everyone. It was resolved that the committee join the Pukekura Park Board and the Returned Soldiers’ Association as a deputation to the Mayor on the question, and Messrs. A. L. Humphries, F. J. Hill and E. Little (secretary) were appointed to represent the committee on the deputation.
