YEARLING SALES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melhpurne, March 7. At the yearling sales a brown filly by The Welkin—Angelina was bought by Mr. T. Stirton, owner of Biplane, for 375 guineas. A bay colt by The Welkin— Andalusite was bought by Mr. G. D. Greenwood (New Zealand) for 400 guineas. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Opunake acceptances are due on Friday. Weights for Rangitikei should appear to-day. Gore races to-day and Thursday; Marlborough on Thursday and Saturday; and Napier Park on Friday and Saturday. Possibly Hector Gray will see sunny Spain this season, for bis employer, Sir Cunliffe Owen, has his crack •four-year-old Eaglehawk, for the Grand Prix de Alphonse XIII., the richest race in the world.

According to the Sporting Chronicle, two of the best named young horses in England this season are “Gasper,” by Cigar—Doubtful, and /World Dominion,” by Hapsburg—Heart’s Desire. Probably we common “colonials” would consider “Twofer” (2 for 3d) a more suitable name for the Cigar colt. Nine horses were quoted at a shorter price than Rostrum, who won the Newmarket Handicap on Saturday, so the result would be h. good “turn up” for the books. The runner-up, Whiz. Bang, was not mentioned in the betting, but Lisnavane was seventh in order of favoritism. These figures were taken from the latest Australian files.

A Wellington scribe reports that contrary to expectations, Mr. Greenwood’s horses were sent ''home instead of being shipped to Sydney last week. Evidently Mason has not made up his mind about th 4 trip to ’Stralia. Wondsr if the plague scared him? Or was it Eurythmic?

Sir Roseberry, who was a big boom (and a bigger failure) over the “bobs,” showed at Trentham that he was possessed of pace by running a first and two seconds, and his more recent win in the Nelson Cup suggests that his owner was fishing for stakes with the wrong tackle. Sir Roseberry is a five-year-old brown gelding by Sir Knox —Merrie Rose, and is a rather fine stamp of a horse to look at.

Last year Foo Chow won the Peninsula (Akaroa) Cup in 2min. 6sec., but on Saturday he had to put up with second berth, a neck behind the aged Vice-Admiral gelding Mythology. The latter’s last dozen starts panned out to 5 firsts, 2 seconds, and 4 thirds.

The accident which threatens to keep Roy Reed out of .the saddle for some little time may prove an unmixed blessing after all, for this capable, little horseman, who has received more than his share of attention from “the stipes” recently, will welcome the enforced spell on more scores than one. When the paid stewards get a jockey “set” they give him no peace, and day after day Reed has been “carpetwl" and fined, until he must be almost bewildered. Whether he has merited all this “attention” the writer cannot say, but one of Charles Schwab’s stories mriy fit the bill. The American iron master met a soldier over in France. The ank was decorated with medals \from one shoulder to the other. Thought Schwab. “There is really a distinguished man,” so, going up to him he said: “Do you mind telling me why you have received all these wonderful medals and things?” The soldier replied: “I will tell you with great pleasure. The first large medal you' see on my left: I got that by mistake. And 1 have all the others because I got that one first!” (This is a story with a moral.)

Mr. G. D. Greenwood has now won the Jackson Stakes straight out on eight occasions, while he was also a partner with the Messrs. Stead in Vice Admiral, which won in 1911. Tn 1910 .he won with Armlet, in 1914 and 15, with Emperador, in 1917, with Bimeter, in 1918 with Biplane, and in 1919, 1921, and 22 with Gloaming. The latter has now won the event three times, which equals the record of Achilles, which, however, won three times in succession.
