TEN GIRLS KILLED.
DISASTER IN A FACTORY. CRIES OF THE INJURED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 7, 5.5 p-m. London, March 6. An explosion at Porttripton, Staffordshire, killed ten and injured thirty girls, who were removing the contents of 100 tons of cartridges. The explosion occurred while the contents were being put into separate receptacles. It blew off the roof, and all I the fifty girls in the room were blackened beyond recognition. All the clothing of many was torn off their bodies and the hair wu burned off others.
While the cartridges were being taken to pieces the factory floor was strewn with gunpowder. When the explosion occurred the girls were trapped in a blazing inferno. Some of the injured rushed into the streets naked and shrieking in agony, and passersby covered them with sadks.
The injured were afterwards taken in lorries to hospital, where it was necessary to discharge convalescent patients to make room for them.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
