Dr. Home, who has been httending the medical conference at Wellington, returned to New Plymouth last night. An Auckland message reports that Mr. Peter Virtue, manager of the Northern Roller Mills, died suddenly during Monday night.
Colonel A. R. Voung, director of the Live Stock Division, De,partment of Agriculture, arrived in New Plymouth last evening.
It is rumored (states the Otago Daily Times) that overtures are being made r,o Sir Joseph »Vard to assume the leadership of the United Progressive Liberal-Labor Party.
Mr.‘W. D. Bean, headmaster of the Sydenham School, has notified the school committee that he will retire on superannuation from May 14. He will then have completed 41 years of service as a school teacher. A cable from London says the Daily Chronicle states that Prince Louis Mountbatten is shortly marrying Miss Edwina Ashley, the heiress of the late .Sir Ernest Cassell. Miss Edwina Ashley is now staying with the Viceroy of India.
The retirement after twenty-seven years’ service with the Union Steam Ship Company is announced of Captain A. M. Edwin. Captain Edwin- commenced his seafaring career as fourth mate on the Tarawera; and has been engaged in various capacities on numerous vessels since.
The death occurred on Thursday of Mr. Thomas Culpan, who was registrar of births, deaths, and, marriages at Auckland for 24 years prior to his retirement a'bout two years ago. Mr. Culpan was born in Auckland 68 years ago, his father being the late Mr. William Culpan, who arrived in the ship Jane Gifford in 1841.
Mr. F. Y. Seddon, secretary of the Wanganui A. and P. Association, arrived iby the mail train last night on a visit* to the Taranaki show. He is accompanied by Mrs. Seddon. While here Mr. Seddon. who is also secretary of the North Island Brass Band Association, will make preliminary arrangements in connection with the forthcoming band contest.
By the death of Mrs. Matilda Gilchrist, which occurred on February 16, 1922, at Nelson, another of the old colonists has passed away. Arriving in Wellington Harbor with her parents on the ship Pepin (554 tons) on Boxin" Day, 1849, she has been a resident of°Wellington ever since, with the exception of the last few years, when she has resided with her daughters in Nelson. Her husband predeceased her many years ago.
A. presentation to the officials of the Titzrov Fire Brigade, which is to be disbanded at the end of the month, was made 'by Mr. J. Kibby at 1“‘. function. The presentations which took the form of gold-mounted pens, were made on behalf of the nremen, said Mr. Kibby, who felt they could not allow the occasion to pass without marking their appreciation of the work of these gentlemen. 1 hem health was toasted enthusiastically. Captain Parkin and Lieut. Bartley suitably responded. Foreman Hall was unavoidably absent.
