ONLY A BOGEY.
THE REAL JAPAN. POWERS EXAGGERATED. NORTHCLIFFE’S VIEWS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received March 6, 7.25 p.m. London, March 5. Lord Northcliffe, in an interview, referring to Japan, said: “J formed the view that the legend of Japan is exaggerated. The Japanese are inclined to think they have beaten the white race, but in reality they have been greatly -foiled. They very Considerably overrate their own powers. They are essentially imitative, but do not originate, and it takes a good many more Japs to perform the tasks that a limited number of Europeans would do. “I do not think our people realise Japan’s absolute autocracy, with a toy Parliament and strangled newspapers. Japan has been too much of a bogey to Europe and America. The decisions of the Washington Conference, which the Japanese intensely disliked, will prevent them encroaching on China, but constant vigilance is needed. The Japanese aggression in China was largely the consequence of the unfortunate Anglo-Jap Alliance, now happily terminated.”—United Service.
