BROKERS FAIL.
CRASH IN_AMFRICA. MISSING. By Telegraph.— Pr*«s Assn —v,nn”right. New York, March 4. Nearly 50 brokerage firms have crashed since January. One of the largest houses is included in to-day’s list of six. Frenzied customers are besieging other houses whose stability is regarded as uncertain. During recent months the stock exchange hqs showed a steady advance and the bucket shops (gambling shops for betting on stocks) were unable to recoup themselves ’because they expected a drop in prices. The proprietors of bucket shops arc fleeing before the crusade of the Dis-trict-Attorney. Out of 50 indictments sworn only six arrests have been made. Detectives find empty offices. Scores of defaulting brokers have fled to Europe, taking their gold and stock certificates with them. They find the trip cheaper than putting up 50,000 dollars bail. TROUBLE IN MONTREAL Ottawa, March 4. Four brokers have failed in Montreal with heavy liabilities. The Mayor hopes that several million dollars worth of (bonds in safes in the vaults of the City fiall will be saved.
