LIFE-SAVING.

TABOR SHIELD COMPETITION. WON BY OLD BOYS A 3. The annual competition for the Tabor Shield was held on Saturday, at the East 'End beach, under the auspices of the North Taranaki head centre of the Royal N.Z. Life-saving Society. It will be remembered that the function was postponed from the previous Saturday, owing to the fact tnat some persons I bathing in the vicinity 'had got into difficulties, and had to Ibe assisted ashore by members of the competing teams. The weather was fine, and a fair number of spectators were present. There was a moderate sea running, causing some of the “subjects” difficulty in allowing sufficiently for the drift to be encountered during the passage to the I buoy. McHardy, subject for the winding team, swam too much to windward, and consequently lost points for his side. The work of the supports was, however, better than in some of the other teams, and this helped to save the situation. Four teams competed: East End No. 1 (holders), East End No. 2, Old Boys No. 1, Old Boys No. 2. The results announced by the judges, Messrs. P. A. Matheson and K. Kirk, are as follows:

The Old Boys’ team consisted of Messrs T. McHardy, R. Morrison, D. Sykes, T. Foden, Hi Packard, R. GHowell and W. Brown. Points are allowed for time taken by rescuers on reaching the subject, fastest time being recorded by East End No. 1. with Old Boys 2 second and Old Boys 1 third. The personnel of the East End No. 1 team was: B. Berge, A. Boon, T. Berge, W. Hardgrave and C. Rawlinson. • • Commenting upon the competition, the judges said that all the teams had put up very good performances, and the general standard of the work was of a much higher order than in previous years. The work of the winning team stood out as a very fine exhibition. They commented upon the fact that in some branches of the rescue work both the first and second teams had obtained full marks. They were of opinion that the rule should be carried out which provided for the test to be made a-t high tide, and for the proper conduct of the tests it was essential that none other than those competing should enter the water in that locality, while the spectators should stand back so as to allow ample scope ■ for teams and judges. Mr. A. R. Davis and his committee were responsible for carrying out the arrangements, while Messrs. Ferry ana Dalgleish acted as timekeepers. Mr. A. R. Standish was present on behalf of the Life-saving Society.
